| | School education has to be a crucial area of focus if the foundation of a knowledge based society is to be built. The National Knowledge Commission has been examining issues relating to school education across the country, with the aim of framing a set of national level recommendations in this area.
Following a National Level workshop on School Education held in New Delhi on 29th July 2006, it was decided that the NKC hold a series of regional workshops across the country. We recognize that our recommendations at the national level must incorporate the many region- specific variations and needs in School Education across the country.
With this aim, we have held regional workshops in Lucknow, Bangalore, Kolkata and Guwahati. We are also planning to hold workshops in Delhi and Jaipur in the near future. A separate workshop for minority education has already been held, and one on tribal education is also being planned for in the coming months.
Our workshops are designed to facilitate consultations with diverse stakeholders in the system, such as teachers and principals, personnel from District Institutes of Education and Training (DIET), State Councils of Educational Research and Training (SCERT), officials from state departments of education, Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA), as well as NGOs and relevant civil society representatives.
These workshops address a variety of concerns, some of which are specific to the region, while others are common across the board. The pattern of expenditure of states and central government, the modalities of decentralization to give greater autonomy to local authorities for school education, and trends in data collection have emerged as important issues. We have also had extensive discussions on the means of universalizing access to schooling, particularly amongst marginalized communities and in far flung locations. In addition, we are looking at reforms in pedagogical techniques, curriculum development and teachers’ education. The National Knowledge Commission is a high-level advisory body to the Prime Minister of India, with the objective of transforming India into a knowledge society. In its endeavour to transform the knowledge landscape of the country, the National Knowledge Commission has submitted around 300 recommendations on 27 focus areas during its three and a half year term. While the term of the NKC has come to an end, the implementation of NKC's recommendations is currently underway at the Central and State levels. Letter to Prime Minister of India
